Trauma-Informed Practices for Teaching and Learning
Trauma-informed pedagogy is a strategic pedagogical approach that prioritizes emotional resilience and inclusivity across academic environments. While it is a well-established paradigm in K-12 education, these pedagogical practices are not as well described in higher education. In this session, workshop participants will reflect on well-established trauma-informed principles, and through vignette based discussions, participants will collaboratively develop strategies to apply in their own educational contexts.

Learning by Doing: Faculty Perspectives on Experiential Learning in Online Environments
How do we facilitate knowledge construction through experience in online environments? Online courses bring together students from diverse geographical regions and various social, cultural, and economic backgrounds. Our challenge as educators is how to design experiential learning that is not place-dependent yet supports students’ critical and reflective learning through experiences.

In this session, we will hear from faculty members across various academic fields at the university and their insights on developing experiential learning opportunities within their online courses. We will learn about specific ideas on structuring experiences in an online environment, actively engaging students in critical reflection and inquiry, and setting opportunities for applying students’ understanding in real-world contexts. We hope these examples inspire you to walk away with ideas on integrating experiential learning experiences into your course.

Virtual Plenary Workshop: Promoting Intentional Dialogue at Georgetown in a Post-Audience World
Please join us for this featured plenary workshop! Description: Digital devices, hybrid working and learning environments in response to the pandemic, and communication platforms have provided great flexibility and have reshaped the way we interact. In many ways, the pandemic has accelerated digital demands on our time and created a focus on efficiency rather than reflection and dialogue. This session will describe a framework that recognizes the outside pressures that we face and helps us to be more intentional in the way we are present with one another and work towards co-creating the types of environments that promote dialogue and understanding.

Signed copies of Dr. Turner's book Being Present: Commanding Attention at Work and at Home, will be raffled off at our book raffle at the Tuesday 4pm Social Hour in HFSC.

An Immersive Dialogue Workshop with In Your Shoes
This in-person interactive session will allow participants to experience In Your Shoes (IYS), a performance-based dialogue methodology created by Georgetown’s Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics. In the IYS process, participants have deep, open conversations around a given topic and then present one another’s perspectives. Through this exchange, participants practice close listening and embodiment as a way to understand the perspectives of another. Session participants will practice exercises rooted in call-and-response, intergroup dialogue, theater, and movement techniques. As part of this unique workshop experience, interested participants will have the opportunity to prepare and present a dialogue at the second IYS session at TLISI. This session is open to anyone interested in learning more about the IYS experience; participants do not need any prior performance experience or need to attend both sessions to participate!

This session will be facilitated by Ijeoma Njaka and Rachel Gartner (Red House / Laboratory for Global Performance & Politics). NOTE: this session is in-person only and will not be streamed.

Learning to Live with AI: Enhancing Writing and Critical Thinking Across the Disciplines
Why continue teaching and practicing writing when AI can produce text rapidly and efficiently? What aspects of the human act of writing are essential to retain for thinking, learning, building relationships, and constructing knowledge? Together, we will explore what remains uniquely human in the writing process, and how we can meaningfully integrate AI into writing assignments and other learning activities in our courses. We will also consider ways we can use AI for our own writing, teaching, and thinking.

The session (being held in-person and also streamed) is an interactive workshop that requires participants to bring laptops and access a free AI tool of their choice (with support). We will do our best to make it as interactive as possible for our colleagues on Zoom, although please understand there will be some limitations. Through hands-on learning, participants will consider the role of writing in academia and discuss research-based practices for using writing (including AI-enhanced writing) as a tool for learning. The session will also explore the very real limitations of AI, while working through key use cases:
  • Designing Writing Assignments that integrate AI: Designing writing assignments (for course in your discipline) that integrate human writing with AI assistance at various stages of the process.
  • Thinking with and about AI: Developing interactive activities that employ AI to engage students in learning and applying key course concepts; teaching students to critically evaluate AI-generated text about course concepts and readings.
  • Writing, teaching, and playing with AI: Exploring and practicing ways to use AI for own research and personal writing.
This session is designed to equip faculty with the skills to integrate AI into their academic practices thoughtfully and effectively, ensuring it enhances rather than undermines the educational experience.

This session will be facilitated by J Palmeri (GU Writing Program) and Sarah Jane Grizi (CNDLS).

Our City is Our Classroom: Experiential Learning Integration at Georgetown
This session will explore the theory, practice, design and current practices of experiential learning across Georgetown and, in particular, at the Capitol Applied Learning Labs (CALL). For students, experiential learning involves ‘learning through doing' through varying degrees of engagement, immersion, and reflection. For faculty, experiential learning means creating courses that are intentionally designed to engage students in connecting course concepts to applicable professional contexts and real-world situations while explicitly and continuously reflecting on their significance and relevance. This workshop will explore all facets of experiential learning at Georgetown including simulations, place-based fieldwork, internships, and expert interactions. Participants will engage in hands-on activities as well as interact with colleagues implementing experiential learning practices at GU.

This session will be facilitated by Susannah McGowan (Red House), Doireann Renzi (CNDLS), Melissa Bernard (CALL), and Randy Bass (Red House). It will be held in-person in the HFSC, as well as streamed via Zoom.

Embodied Education for Ecological Belonging
In this 90-minute workshop, we'll embark on a transformative journey, diving deep into the values of interdisciplinary learning and embodied education within the context of ecological belonging. Through call-and-response activities, we'll create a harmonious space for collective exploration.

Drawing from our diverse experiences as post-baccalaureate fellows at the Earth Commons, Center for Social Justice, and Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics, we'll share our individual stories, weaving together narratives of discovery, challenge, and growth. We'll transition into immersive storytelling sessions, where participants will respond to reflection prompts through various creative mediums—be it poetry, short stories, vision boards, maps, or constellation activities.

These activities will allow us to tap into our imagination, intuition, and emotions, fostering a deeper connection to the ecological world around us. As we share our creations and insights, we'll engage in thoughtful discussions on how these practices can be integrated into educational settings and the importance of doing so to be trauma-informed and culturally sustainable educators. Together, we'll explore practical strategies for implementing interdisciplinary and embodied approaches in the classroom, empowering educators to nurture a sense of ecological belonging among their students. Join us on this enriching journey of exploration, creation, and collaboration as we reimagine education through the lens of ecological interconnectedness.

Participants will then be able to see work from participants who attended the earlier IYS session at TLISI. Lastly, we will share ways for other faculty, staff, and students to get involved with future IYS projects. This session is open to anyone interested in learning more about the IYS experience; participants do not need any prior performance experience or need to attend both sessions to participate!
